Using a bicycle on Dublin public transport

Below you’ll find details about which modes of transport you can take a bike on in Dublin, along with information about which stations and stops in Dublin provide bike parking. You’ll also find information about how to rent a bike in Dublin via the Dublin Bikes scheme.

Taking a bike on buses in Dublin

  • On local Dublin bus services provided by Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead, only folding bikes are allowed onto buses (and it’s advisable to cover them before boarding). There is no charge to bring a folding bike on a bus.

  • On longer-distance Bus Eireann services in the Greater Dublin Area, folding bikes can be brought on free of charge. Normal bikes can be accommodated if there is room on the bus, but they usually need to be placed in a separate luggage compartment and may be subject to a charge.

  • Bicycle policies for other operators vary — in many cases fold-up bicycles will be fine, but it is best to check with any bus company you are intending to travel with in advance of taking a bike on one of their services.

Taking a bike on trains in Dublin

  • Fold-up bikes can be brought onto any Dublin train service at any time free of charge, so long as they are folded up properly.

  • You can bring a full-size bicycle onto DART trains free of charge, but only during certain times: bikes are not permitted before 10am or between 3.30pm and 7pm, Monday to Friday. No restrictions apply at weekends.

  • You can bring a full-size bicycle onto Commuter trains free of charge, but again only during certain times: bikes are not permitted before 10am or between 3.30pm and 7pm, Monday to Friday. No restrictions apply at weekends.

Taking a bike on Dublin trams (‘Luas’)

  • Full-size bikes are not permitted on Dublin trams, but bike parking is available at many tram stops - see below for details.

Bike parking at Dublin’s train and tram stations

Bike parking is available in a large number of Dublin’s train and tram stations — you can see which stations you can park a bicycle at by downloading our Dublin train map.

In most cases, the bike parking available consists of simple bike racks (which are free to use) but some stations also provide secure bike lockers for a fee.

You can find out if a particular station has a rentable bike locker by going to Irish Rail’s station information section, locating your station, and then clicking the ‘Parking and Transport’ link.

Dublin Bikes scheme

You can rent a bike from a wide variety of bike stations in Central Dublin via the Dublin Bikes scheme.

Located in close proximity to each other, every station has a minimum of 15 stands. You can find out where these stations are and how to rent a bike on our our the Dublin Bike rental page.
